INTRODUCTION
Starting to shave is every blokes “passage to adulthood”. It’s like your very first driving lesson, getting into a nightclub for the first time or moving int your first flat: memorable and a significant event in your life! Lads don’t always want to ask the “old man” how to shave, so here is a definitive guide to getting your face “fuzz free”.
Choose your weapon!
There is a huge choice out there from simple disposables, right up to the top end products from manufacturers such as Gillette, Wilkinson Sword and King of Shaves. Preparation is key, although the more expensive razors have lubrication strips and multiple blades to give you a closer, more comfortable shave.
PRIME
Wash your face
Shaving your face when it isn’t clean is more likely to lead to irritation so it is best to give wash your face before shaving. Using hot water also helps soften up those whiskers, making it easier for the blade to do its job! After a few minutes, your man fuzz will be much softer and easier to shave. If you can, shave after having a bath or shower.
SHAVE
Oil or Gel up
Foams can dry out your skin, Oils and Gels often give a smoother shave. Use a product such as King of Shaves Alphagel and apply sparingly, massaging it into your beard. Too much and you’ll end up with gunk everywhere!
Hold your Razor with confidence!
Make sure that your razor blade is sharp, a dull blade will cause “shaving burn”, not nice!! Shave with short strokes going “with the grain”, if your whiskers are growing downwards, then shave that area with down strokes. Pull your skin tight against your face, this will give you the flattest surface and best shave. Shave your cheeks first, followed by your neck. Finally, shave around your chin and lips. Make sure you wash out your razor often to stop it clogging up.
Once you have finished make sure you wash your face again, getting rid of any remaining Gel or Oil. Use cooler water as this will close up the pores in your skin and then pat yourself dry with a towel.
PROTECT
Mosturise
It is essential to use a good quality moisturizer after you have shaved, it isn’t “girly” it just keeps your skin in tip top condition. You loose loads of essential oils when you shave and you need to replace them…
Et Voila! Shaved and ready to hit the town!

Headshaving… the 101 on keeping your noggin smooth…
What is the correct way to shave your head? That is the question I am often asked and by following these simple steps the “billiard ball” look can be yours!!!
Step 1 Choose your weapon!!
Many people shave their head regularly using a normal razor and blade combo. Just like shaving your face, the more “tech” the blades e.g. Gillette Fusion, or Wilkinson Sword’s new Hydro, the smoother the shave seems to be. Personally, I use HeadBlade as I find it much easier than a face razor. The big advantage of HeadBlade is that there is more than one point in contact with your scalp at all times so it is easier to avoid “dig ins”! Ouch…
Step 2 First time Headshavers…
De-Fuzzzzzzzzzzz…. You need to trim as much of your hair off as possible. To do this I normally use a standard set of electric “hair clippers”. Many high street shops have these and they are easy to use. With your hair dry, buzz the fuzz!
Step 3 Almost ready
You need to really “wet” down your hair. Ideally take a shower as hair usually wets down properly after about 3 minutes. If you can’t take a shower, then using a flannel that has been dipped into hot (but not too hot…) water does the trick.
Step 4 Lather up
Use a good quality shaving gel or oil (foams tend to dry your skin out). King of shaves Alphagel seems to work just fine! Massage the gel into your scalp and then start your engine!!
Step 5 Shave
If you are using a HeadBlade, using your preferred hand, place your index finger through the loop and adjust it for comfort. With the blade leading, gently smooth the HeadBlade over your scalp, using your fingers and base of your hand as a guide. Do not press down on the HeadBlade, just let it glide… Shaving “with the grain” is advisable until you become an experienced Head Shaver. It doesn’t shave as close as going against the grain but is most definitely easier… Flip the HeadBlade around when you come to do the back of your head so that you will be shaving once again with the blade leading.
Step 6 Wash & protect
Once your noggin feels nice and smooth wash any excess gel off with warm water and gently pat down your scalp. To finish off, use a good quality moisturiser to maintain your scalp in tip top condition.
Don’t be surprised by the colour of your scalp if you are a first time headshaver and remember – it does get a lot easier with practice. To start with it used to take me about 30 minutes to shave my head, now, after a shower it is finished in about 5…
